Free public event set for July 12 to promote hope, education, and unity
BILLINGS, MT — July 7, 2025 — The 26th Annual March Against Drugs and Violence (MADV) will take place on Saturday, July 12, 2025 at 11:30 a.m. on the Yellowstone County Courthouse Lawn, inviting the Billings community to take a public stand and raise awareness about substance use disorders and violence. The event, which neighbors the downtown Strawberry Festival, includes speakers, music, a community BBQ, door prizes, and free T-shirts for the first 300 attendees.
Founded by Mike Yakawich after a neighborhood tragedy, the March has grown from a handful of concerned parents into a powerful community tradition attended by hundreds each year. The goal: to raise awareness, promote education, and foster collaboration to build a safer, healthier future for Billings and beyond.
This year’s program features:
- A proclamation from Mayor Bill Cole or Deputy Mayor Roy Boyett
- Remarks from Former Senator Chris Friedel
- A personal story of recovery from a Passages resident
- Participation from community leaders, elected officials, and partner organizations
- Live performances and a community mural by Tyson Middle
The March takes place at a time when Montana faces serious public health challenges.
- More than 20% of Montanans aged 12 and older now experience a substance use disorder each year.
- Fentanyl- and meth-related overdose deaths have surged dramatically in the past five years.
- In Yellowstone County, domestic violence calls increased by 25%, and assaults with weapons rose 50% in recent years.
- Over 37% of women in Montana have experienced violence in their lifetime, and access to support services remains limited.
“This event is about standing together—against drugs, against violence, and for our neighbors,” said Yakawich. “We don’t just talk about the issues—we act, we connect, and we build community.”
Dozens of local organizations collaborate annually to plan MADV, including Alternatives, Inc., Tumbleweed, School District 2, Rimrock Foundation, STEP, Inc., Elks Lodge #394, Boys and Girls Club of Yellowstone County, Yellowstone Boys and Girls Ranch, the DUI Task Force, Global Peace Foundation, and more. Supporters are encouraged to bring banners, wear MADV T-shirts, and enjoy a day of education, unity, and celebration.
All are welcome. No registration is required.
